General Assembly: Careers Page Refresh
U X D E S I G N | I N T E R A C T I V E D E S I G N
General Assembly is a global educational company on a mission to empower a global community to pursue work they love. Focusing on the most relevant and in-demand skills across data, design, business and technology, GA is confronting a skills gap through best-in-class instruction and providing access to opportunities.
In the Summer of 2016, I was brought on as a UX Design Intern to collaborate with designers, engineers and PM's in leading the UI/UX development of their 'Careers' Page. The scope of the project included designing a fresh onboarding page, highlighting the goals and achievements of the company and creating a more efficient portal for applicants to filter through job listings.

Design Goals
Our team at General Assembly identified two main value propositions for the Career page: a seamless application process and a summarized overview of the company values and goals. Keeping these key aspects in mind, my goal as a designer was to create a fresh page that informed the applicant, and other interested parties, about the company, it's values & goals and direct them to an easily filtrable job openings dashboard. I worked to structure the experience in a way that would connect relevant content to the users, while also aiding manual exploration.

Creative Process
Throughout this 4 week-long project, I worked with our Website Team engineers and PM's to brainstorm features that would be useful and engaging, while gauging their long-term vision of building an easier application process for candidates applying for jobs.
I started with an elementary critique of the existing page, as well as researched other existing career pages of similar companies. Some initial thoughts were:
-
The description of the company was very formal and not engaging enough for applicants to be interested to apply.
-
There were no visuals or images of the office. There was a strong need to showcase an authentic look into the company's culture through photos of employees collaborating
and socializing.
-
Job openings dashboard: Users could only filter openings by location. There was also no provision for 'general application' for applicants who were not sure which position they would be
fit for.
Wireframing
We explored several iterations of wireframes. The main aim was to create a 'careers page' that screamed company culture. This way the candidate knows immediately what they’re up for when they apply to a job with General Assembly.

Job Application Dashboard
For the new job application dashboard, we wanted to allow the user to search by Teams and Roles, Locations, and Time Commitments. This gives the user power to search by what’s most important to them. We also added a provision to send in a 'General Application' for those applicants who were not sure which role was the right fit for them.

Final Webpage
To inform and onboard potential candidates to the General Assembly Careers Page, we implemented an interactive long-scroll page. From a user experience standpoint, we wanted to break down the complex elements of the page into bite-size segments of information for the user which they can navigate through a horizontal nav-bar.
